Film and Visual Art

Learn to analyse films and visual texts – camera, sound, editing and composition – and use them as texts for reflection on society, like Sorry We Missed You or street art.

What do you want to do now?

In short

Just enough theory to use it

Films and images are texts: they argue with choices you can analyse. Film's toolbox is mise-en-scène (what's in the frame), camera work (angles, distance, movement), editing (pace, cuts, montage) and sound (diegetic and non-diegetic). Visual art adds composition, colour and placement – street art adds location as meaning. English 1's films are society-facing: Sorry We Missed You on gig-economy work, The Florida Project on poverty, Pride on solidarity. Analyse the how; then discuss what the text says about the issue.
