English as a Global Language
Learn to reflect on the influence and use of English in global information exchange – lingua franca, code-switching, and what global English does to other languages.
What do you want to do now?
Just enough theory to use it
English is the world's lingua franca: most conversations in English today happen between people who are not native speakers. The curriculum asks you to reflect on its influence and use in global exchange of information and opinions – from science and diplomacy to gaming and memes. Key tools: lingua franca, code-switching, anglicisms, linguistic imperialism and domain loss. Strong answers see both directions: what English gives the world, and what it costs other languages – including Norwegian.
